The GLEC Framework works for business
The GLEC Framework is the leading methodology for freight transport that allows companies to consistently calculate their GHG footprint across the global supply chain. Starting in 2018 it will be the basis for transport emissions reporting through CDP and Science-Based Targets initiative - and it works with the GHG Protocol.
In 2017 Smart Freight Centre conducted five projects to guide corporate implementation of the GLEC Framework. The GLEC Framework implementation projects proved that businesses with credible emissions data can make better decisions to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact and cost. We are thankful to our partners who participated in the projects: Intel, HP Inc, Kuehne+Nagel, UPS, as well as two anonymous shippers and two LSPs.
"The results of the GLEC Framework based calculations give better insights which ultimately should lead to better decisions concerning larger supply chain questions. GLEC Framework based emissions information will have an effect on how to set up a supply chain for particular projects." Jaap Sinnige, Intel
"At Kuehne + Nagel we are convinced that the GLEC Framework is an essential tool for any company that has made sustainability and carbon footprint transparency a trademark on its business strategy to serve customer and investors alike. The implementation project helped to confirm K+N’s step by step GLEC Framework implementation plan; we are on track." Edgar Uribe, Kuehne+Nagel
GLEC Framework implementation projects
The implementation projects covered complicated global supply chains including road, sea, rail and air transport. The projects improved corporate logistics emissions calculation approaches and data sourcing practices, and also demonstrated the benefits of collaboration and transparency between shippers and logistics service providers (LSPs). Each project improved understanding of the needs of the industry, existing carbon emissions practices, and how the GLEC Framework can improve the accuracy of emissions disclosure.
The 2017 implementation projects proved that the GLEC Framework works for business
With data available to companies today, GLEC Framework results are suitable for CDP reporting, identifying hotspots in the transport chain and assessing the emissions savings from using more efficient freight vehicles or routes. Moreover, the GLEC Framework works within existing calculation tools and practices. Companies can start to implement the GLEC Framework today and progress step by step towards full alignment.
The GLEC Framework helps companies to reduce the time they spend on logistics emissions calculations so they can focus more on what matters - emissions reduction actions.
