Learn more about our Develop Your Sustainable Logistics Roadmap Training: Interview with participants Ibrahim and Piotr from DP World

Amsterdam, 29 June 2022 - Ibrahim and Piotr from DP World share their insights after attending Smart Freight Centre's 'Develop your Sustainable Logistics Roadmap (SLR) training'.

Can you share about DP World and their decarbonization journey?

DP World is a highly entrepreneurial company. We’ve grown from being primarily a ports and terminal business, to a key player in the marine services division. Our mission is to be the leading data-driven smart trade enabler and our recent acquisitions have focused on the logistics sector.

Back in 2019 we completed our decarbonization strategy and started tracking DP World's carbon footprint. We set our intermediate target to reach 28% emission reduction by 2030 and net-zero carbon for the Group by 2050. Besides decarbonizing our own operations, DP World assists clients in reducing their carbon emissions with tools such as Sea Rates. Sea Rates allows customers to pick their preferred cargo routes not only based on price, mode and distance, but also by taking into consideration the overall carbon footprint. This allows customers to gain insight into the carbon footprint of their products and build on their decarbonization strategies. This ambition led DP World to connect with SFC to have their tools accredited through the GLEC Framework and ultimately to apply for the SLR-training.

What are your main takeaways from the course?

DP World has been on the decarbonization journey for a few years now and the SLR training was a fantastic opportunity to benchmark ourselves against our competitors and other industries within the supply chain. This allowed us to assess our progress and learn from other companies.

Equally important was the practical insights we gained from the course in the form of valuable frameworks, tools, terminologies and case studies. The training provided a great overview of the range of toolkits available to decarbonization professionals.

What we definitely liked most about the course was learning about different case studies and hearing directly from practitioners who have been implementing decarbonization measures in their organizations.

How are you using the insights within your own company?

As we mentioned, since we launched our decarbonization strategy a few years ago, much activity has already taken place. For example, we recently started our scope 3 analysis, in addition to our scope 1 and 2 analysis. Scope 3 is the final piece of the puzzle before we can get our SBTi target validated. Using the knowledge and toolkits we gained on this topic throughout the course, we could really take it to the next level.

Would you recommend the course?

We would definitely recommend the course. We think that there are really two types of companies in particular that can benefit from it. First of all, it’s a fantastic course for companies who are very early on their decarbonization journey; before setting their targets, setting up their systems and developing their strategy. They can probably save a lot of money on external providers of such services if they join the course, listen and implement some of the toolkits and frameworks from the SLR. For companies like us who are already on their decarbonization journey, the course may be a useful way to organize and enhance the internal toolkits while looking for inspiration on how to push the boundaries of our decarbonization efforts.
