- Is committed to and in the process of adopting the GLEC Framework*, using the methodology by the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG)* as a basis for ocean freight emissions calculation aligned with GLEC Framework guidance. Maersk promotes the GLEC Framework to its customers and members of the CCWG.
- Set its goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2050* by making carbon neutral vessels commercially viable by 2030, and accelerating new innovations and adoption of new technology. Its interim 2030 target is 60% relative CO2 reduction by 2030 from 2008 baseline According to the CCWG benchmark, Maerk’s average weighted CO2 performance is approximately 9% ahead of the industry average.
Reduce
- Takes action to optimize the efficiency of the fleet mainly through more fuel efficient vessels, technical retrofittings, and improved planning and network optimisation This has resulted in a relative CO2 reduction per container moved by 47% by the end of 2018 from 2007 levels.
- Has committed to invest significant resources for innovation and fleet technology to improve the technical and financial viability of decarbonised solutions and hopes to generate a pull towards researchers, technology developers, investors, cargo owners and legislators that will activate strong industry involvement, co-development, and sponsorship of sustainable solutions strongly needed in the maritime industry.
Collaborate
- Supports sector-wide agreements that help ensure a level playing field. For example, the company actively pushes for increased regulation and an incentivisation mechanism for shipping’s GHG emissions through the International Maritime Organization (IMO)*.
- Formed ‘Carbon Pacts’ with several customers, among others with Signify (Philips Lighting)*, BMW and Tetra Pak, confirming joint commitments to sustainable growth and outlining the aspirations and areas for collaboration, including targets to reduce the carbon footprint from the ocean transport with Maersk of . Progress on set ambitions and detailed carbon footprint performance is monitored per agreed frequency.
