SFC Job Opportunity: Sustainable Logistics Procurement Professional

FTE: 40 hours/week

One of SFC’s flagship initiatives is the Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance (SFBA) which aims to meet the growing demand of shippers to take collaborative action beyond reporting. SFBA members are encouraged to cooperate in order to shift towards zero-emissions freight across all modes of transport in collaboration with their supply chains and partners. Through the work of the Alliance, Members are enabled to take collective action in projects, improve and advance their freight procurement, amplify their work towards driving policy change and encouraged to foster collaborative partnerships.
SFBA procurement program is set out to transform the market. Through a collaborative approach with freight buyers, service providers and leading NGOs we will aggregate and tender the demand for zero emission logistics. The focus initially is on medium and heavy goods vehicles and associated charging infrastructure in Europe and the US with potential expansion to India and other modes of transport. Next to this, you will work with our implementation partners to lead the development of a Procurement Playbook, enabling corporates to procure zero emission logistics services.

We drive transparency and mobilize multinational companies and their logistics partners to take action. About the position
You will be working closely with Smart Freight Centre Director Rik Arends, Director of the Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance, leading international multinational corporates seeking to procure sustainable logistics, and global partners.SFBA procurement program is set out to transform the market. Through a collaborative approach with freight buyers, service providers and leading NGOs we will aggregate and tender the demand for zero emission logistics. The focus initially is on medium and heavy goods vehicles and associated charging infrastructure in Europe and the US with potential expansion to India and other modes of transport. Next to this, you will work with our implementation partners to lead the development of a Procurement Playbook, enabling corporates to procure zero emission logistics services.
Your tasks will include:
- Leading the Sustainable Procurement work program, including leadership of workstream activities, reviewing project progress and developing next-step materials
- Work closely with our implementation and delivery partners to lead a sustainable procurement working group in the freight sector.
- Engage with 40+ multinational corporates, international NGOs and implementation partners to discuss and align on sustainable logistics procurement
- Lead procurement and tender activities for collaborative buying of zero carbon logistics solutions
- Developing procurement practices for the logistics sector to promote and embed sustainability (reduction of GHG emissions) into market engagements and procurement decision making
- Support the SFBA director in identifying opportunities together with stakeholders to create additional value for, and support the active transition to a low carbon logistics industry
Ideal candidate characteristics:
- 7+ years of experience in both strategic and operational contracting and procurement roles, ideally with a minimum of 3 years with a specific logistics focus (buying equipment and/or freight services)
- Affinity for supporting and guiding others, ability to understand and adapt to differing perspectives and cultural differences in how messaging is given
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills
- Excellent presentation skills and storytelling capacity, ability to take stakeholders on a journey is crucial
- Track record of developing and implementing multi-party/collaborative procurement strategies and demonstration of management of procurement projects
- Self-starter able to identify and create opportunities to generate value and link supply chain consideration to the bigger strategic picture by identifying the business case for sustainability
- Fluency in English, comparable to a native English speaker
- Ability to solve unstructured problems and understand/speak to stakeholder priorities and challenges
- Willingness to get involved in (and track record of) implementation activities and a ‘boots on the ground’ mentality
