Smart Freight Centre ready to decarbonize the air transport industry with newest program Clean Air Transport

Amsterdam, 23 May, 2023 - With the launch of its newest program, Clean Air Transport, Smart Freight Centre (SFC) will set a solid foot on the ground to help decarbonize the air transport industry. This adds to a portfolio of global programs for ocean freight, road freight and regional programs in China and India.

SFC’s Clean Air Transport program aims to unite first movers on sustainable aviation in the freight sector, leveraging increased transparency of the GHG emissions from air freight services to drive decarbonization measures across the air transport sector.  Air transport decarbonization will depend on increased utilization rates within the system as a whole, ongoing fleet renewal towards newer, more efficient aircraft, and a significant ramp up of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) availability and use in the market, supported by a common and well-accepted book and claim framework (until SAF use is the norm).

/SFC’s Clean Air Transport program will address all of these issues, working with strategic partners and scheme members to leverage increased access to, and use of, primary data to support decisions that reduce GHG emissions and to roll out practical book and claim guidelines that accelerate the use of SAF.  We will also work with program members, including airlines, and other partners such as SBTi to further develop the GLEC methodology to support alignment in target setting within the air transport sector and an exchange on measures and best practices taken to achieve such targets.

“Decarbonizing the air transport industry is critical to reach our climate goals. Through participating in Clean Air Transport, airlines and other multinational companies demonstrate strong leadership and show to others that the time is now to unite and take steps towards sustainable aviation together. We call for more ambitious airlines, shippers and freight forwarders to join Clean Air Transport and become part of Smart Freight Centre community.”

''The Clean Air Transport Partnership is a great opportunity. The time to decarbonize is now and we can only do this together. We need first movers who are willing to put in all their knowledge and passion to drive this forward, so others can follow. ''

“The airfreight industry is a complex ecosystem involving many stakeholders. By uniting, we can catalyse, accelerate and transform the industry. We acknowledge the work that SFC intends to achieve with the Clean Air Transport Program, and we share the same ambition as part of the ecosystem. I am sure our passionate team will channel all of our positive energy, together with industry partners, towards a single shared goal: creating a more sustainable airfreight industry. We invite other like-minded organizations in the industry to join the Clean Air Transport program as well”.
