Smart Freight Alliance China

Advancing climate action through collaboration and supportive policy

Many multinationals have a presence in China because it is a global center of manufacturing and a growing consumer market. They depend heavily on their logistics networks to be successful as a business, but also to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

These multinationals share common challenges. How to make the logistics network more efficient and sustainable? How to increase transparency and reliability of goods moved? How to anticipate and align with government policy?

The Smart Freight Alliance China is an industry-led alliance of multinational companies that want to tackle these challenges together. Facilitated by SFC, the alliance works together with industry associations, government and other stakeholders to achieve concrete action and supportive policy.

What will this alliance deliver?

  • Smart Freight Forums: at least three forums per year that bring together representatives from industry, government and research to develop practical solutions and link these with government policy implementation. Topics have included 1) shift from trucks to rail and barges; 2) logistics emissions calculation; 3) urban freight; and 4) safe, compliant and sustainable transport services. Reports can be downloaded here.

  • Facilitated Shippers Dialogues: multinationals share knowledge and experiences, and join forces to implement solutions where collaboration is essential, such as carrier management, asset sharing, new energy vehicles, and multi-modal transport.

  • Collaboration projects with carriers: multinationals support their carriers and drivers through training (Smart Transport Manager Training) and implementing concrete solutions that improve efficiency and reduce emissions. The alliance brings in relevant partners, such as industry associations, technology providers, OEMs, experts, and local governments.
