Decarbonizing freight transport is critical to achieving the global goals of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Today, freight transport accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions. By 2050, direct CO2 emissions from logistics are set to rise by 42%.

Currently, freight buyers are presented with overwhelming numbers of options from sustainable solution providers and struggle/s with the challenges posed by individual efforts and the lack of relevant policy support.

To accelerate the decarbonization of freight transport, collaboration is a crucial element for success. To attain zero emissions freight transport, the sector must transition to a sustainable freight system in which players take collective responsibility and act simultaneously.

Organizations on their journey to freight decarbonization can become a member of the SFC community. Members have access to a wide portfolio of initiatives and projects to help them collaborate to improve their GHG emission performance and supply chain economics. Membership unlocks solutions through several SFC programs, including Global Logistics Emission Council (GLEC) (GLEC), Clean Cargo, Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance (SFBA), and Clean Air Transport (CAT).

SFBA is set to establish a new era of collaboration in the freight and logistics sector.

SFBA aims to bring about system change in the freight and logistics sector. By providing relevant knowledge, and harnessing the effort and networks of Smart Freight Centre (SFC), BSR, World Economic Forum (WEF) and other initiatives, SFBA creates a new center of gravity for collaboration.

Fleet Electrification Coalition
The Fleet Electrification Coalition (FEC) aims to speed up large-scale ​e-truck deployment by leveraging the power of demand aggregation​.

As a platform for players across the freight and logistics sector, SFBA is an inclusive Alliance that is well-positioned to achieve tangible impact:

1. GROWTH AND EXPOSURE - Growing the platform to increase both the number of freight buyers as well as their exposure to updates about freight decarbonization solutions and related procurement practices. 
2. CONCRETE PROJECTS AND TARGETS - Developing concrete freight decarbonization projects, in collaboration with members, working collectively towards achieving 100m tonnes of CO2e reduction by 2030.
3. STANDARDIZATION - Implementing the GLEC Framework as the tool for companies and initiatives, enabling SFBA to execute a global stocktake concerning freight emissions within the next three years.

Together in SFBA, parties will set off a flywheel of progress which will consequently promote innovation, cost reduction of sustainable solutions, unlock investments, and establish critical number of companies backing enabling policy asks.
